Sanctuary of the Great Gods

Things to see & do at Samothraki island

Overview of Sanctuary of the Great Gods

Located at Paleopoli, the ancient city of Samothraki, it is among the best archaeological monuments found in the Greek islands. A major religious centre for more than a millennium (7th c BC – 4th c AD), it was dedicated to the cult of the mighty Kaveiroi, becoming a place of mysterious initiations, rites and sacrifices, equally important with the famed Eleusinian mysteries. The site features the Propylon, Anaktoron, Arsinoeion, Temenos, Hieron, stoa, theatre and the Nike monument (where the famous statue used to stand). Last but not least, a visit to the Archaeological Museum that hosts findings of the site is highly recommended.
